CONTACTING YOUR COUNSELOR
During the school day, students must remain in their classes and will not be seen by their counselor without written permission (blue pass). Students should schedule an appointment to see their counselor before school, during lunch, or after school. Scheduling can be done through the counseling secretary.

Counselors have drop-in sessions during lunch and after school.

Parents can contact their student’s counselor by phone (510) 879-3050, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Messages can be left with the counseling secretary.

VISION
It is the counselors’ vision that all students will develop a positive outlook on the future and acquire the attitudes, knowledge, and skills necessary to become self-disciplined, self-sufficient, self-directed, compassionate, and contributing members of the community.
MISSION
It is the goal of the counseling department to utilize the widest variety of services, programs, and techniques to secure the success of the students they serve. To this end we offer individual, family, and group consultations for academics, guidance, and career planning.
SERVICES
The counseling department believes that informed and careful planning is the first step in securing student future. Student and counselor discuss the student’s goals and plans for life after high school. Counselors are here to deal directly with any issue students may have. They work as advocates for student success. They provide resources to deal with student academic or personal concerns.

All students are assigned to a counselor whose responsibilities are to assist students in solving problems of an academic, peer, personal, or career nature. The counselors help the student plan a program of studies for his/her high school career, discuss future plans and assist in program choices by providing information about college requirements and vocations in which the student is interested. The counselors are also responsible for helping students with behavior problems and confer with teachers, parents, and students to help solve problems.

PROGRAM CHANGES
Program changes will be made to correct mistakes or to balance classes during the first marking period of either semester. Mistakes” include: repeating a course previously passed; being in the wrong level (e.g. AP instead of P).

Since all classes are year-long, students who request to drop an elective class will be given a short day if no other elective is available. This short day will require parental approval.

Requests for program changes to a different teacher or period for the same subject must be approved by either the Principal or Assistant Principal. Prior to administrative approval, the parent must meet with the original teacher and submit a request for change in writing.

During the second marking period of each semester, all program changes will require administrative approval (Principal or AP). During the third marking period, there will be no program changes including the dropping of classes – unless initiated by the Principal.
