Health Academy takes part in Asthma Walk, September 29th

Dear Friends,

On Saturday, Sept. 29, the Oakland Tech Health Academy students, teachers and friends are walking to raise money to fight asthma. This is the third year the Health Academy has participated and we have doubled our goal! The past two years we raised $1000 - this year our goal is $2000.

We are involved with the American Lung Association because we are committed to help children and families breath easier by raising funds to support critical education, treatment, research, and advocacy to counter the ever increasing asthma epidemic.

Asthma is the number one cause of school absenteeism and pediatric hospitalization within California.

At Oakland Tech, between 20-25% of our students have asthma. Several of our Health Academy students work as asthma peer educators through the Oakland Kicks Asthma Program sponsored by the American Lung Association.

The American Lung Association has taken the lead in developing an extended linkage of direct service asthma programs in California and sponsors the largest network of asthma research centers in the country.

Please visit my web page to make a tax deductible donation online at http://oaklandasthmawalk.kintera.org. Please give what you are able; every dollar makes a difference.

Thanks for your financial support as we participate in the American Lung Association’s “Asthma Walk."

If you are free on Sept. 29, we would love to have you join us for the walk!

Sincerely,

Maureen Nixon-Holtan

Health & Bioscience Academy
The Health and Biotechnology Academy operates as a “school within a school” program for students interested in careers in health, medicine, biology or biotechnology. Students in grades 10 to 12 combine academic classes with hands-on laboratory and hospital/clinical experiences. The Academy offers frequent career speakers, field trips, mentors, First Aid and CPR certification, summer jobs, internships, and health service projects.

Enrollment in the Academy is by application. Most academy students enter as sophomores and spend two to five periods each day for three years in its intensive, close-knit program.
