Dear Parents,
We have spoken with your child and together have made selections for next year’s classes. Your child’s course selections have been sent to your home. Please discuss your child’s choices with him or her. Please sign and have your son or daughter return the selection form to the Counselor by Thursday, April 3rd.
Also we are including the Four Year Education Plan for you to use when talking with your child about their education. As the enclosed instruction sheet says, this is for you to keep as reference as your child moves toward graduation.
If you have any questions about the choices, or would like to discuss your child’s progress, please call his or her Counselor.
Sincerely,
Oakland
Tech Counselors

INSTRUCTIONS TO STUDENTS AND PARENTS:
Plan and Set Goals Now
Please take time now to discuss with your son or daughter your expectations and hopes for a successful educational experience at Oakland Tech. Read the Course Catalog carefully to learn about all of the opportunities that are available at Oakland Tech. We also suggest that you make an appointment to talk with the counselors, teachers, and administrators to get more complete information about the programs of study that are available.
Academies, Honors, and Advanced Placement
Keep in mind the opportunities for studying in one of the Academies (Computer, Engineering, Health), in the Paideia program, and in Honors (HP) and Advanced Placement (AP) classes.
Some of the classes in these programs have prerequisites. Effective planning will ensure that your son or daughter will be ready for success in future classes. Academy applications are taken in the second semester of 9th grade for Academy participation in grades 10, 11, and 12. All Advanced Placement students must take the AP exams at the end of the year. The student must pay a fee for each Advanced Placement exam. This fee may be adjusted according to financial need.
THE FOUR-YEAR EDUCATIONAL PLAN FORM
Review the Four-Year Educational Plan that is attached. There is a section for each of the graduation requirements of the Oakland Unified School District. The form also indicates the number of years of study in each subject that is required. One full year of study equals two semesters.
At the end of each semester, sit down with your child and check the boxes of the courses that he/she has passed for that semester. This will give you an ongoing record of your child’s pathway to graduation.
Keep in mind that the regular school day consists of 6 periods. Some students take 7 classes by coming to school early for A period or staying after school for B period.
For English Language Learners, the ELD classes will meet the English requirements for graduation. Your first ELD class will be assigned to you based on your English proficiency. After you complete that class, you will complete the other ELD classes in order. You may be able to complete more than one ELD class in a year. Once you are redesignated, you will enroll in the standard English class for your grade level.

Class Scheduling for 2008-09
We will be registering our current Oakland Tech students for the 2008-2009 school year on March 17-21 via their English classes. April 1 will be a make-up day.
English teachers are instructed to bring your classes down to the staff cafeteria on the following days so we can meet with our students and assist them with selecting their courses for the next school year.
Please have your students bring a pen or a pencil. In addition, please provide an assignment for the students while they are waiting to complete the registration process.
