Youth Leadership Opportunities:
Peer Health Education
Oakland Tech students have the opportunity to develop their leadership, teamwork, critical thinking, and public speaking skills. During the first semester, students learn about health topics that effect youth, while the second semester is spent developing and giving classroom presentations that promote health and wellness. A large focus is on reproductive health topics including pregnancy and sexually transmitted infection prevention, although many other topics are addressed. 15 male and female students are accepted for this yearlong program. This group meets weekly and possibly some weekends for fieldtrips.
Male Involvement Program (MIP)
Young men that attend Oakland Tech are encouraged to accept the male responsibility in pregnancy prevention. MIP teaches comprehensive sex education/Male responsibility, healthy relationship and about keeping your word. This group meets weekly to discuss the challenges young men face in society while breaking down stereotypes and learning about reproductive health topics. Students also learn about the societal impact on health and being healthy as determined by popular culture, while addressing issues such as discrimination, stereotyping, and cultural values. This group meets weekly and also some weekends for fieldtrips and community service activities.
